Presently the term Genetic engineering today is no longer a new one for the whole world. Almost every single day in the newspapers, TV, latest magazines the newer inventions of the genetic engineering are found. Genetic engineering can be termed as the practice which manipulates the organism’s genes with a view to produce an expected outcome. Some other methods which falls under this particular category are the: DNA technology, the genetic modifications (GM) and last but not the least the gene splicing.
Major Applications of Genetic Engineering
Almost each and every field of life is affected by Genetic engineering. To name a few: agriculture, food industry, medicine industry and so on.
A. Applications in Agriculture
By making use of genetic engineering it is even possible to prepare the clones of the genetically manipulated plants and the animals that are also of agricultural significance having the expected characteristics. This would enhance the nutritive values of the plant and the animal food. As a matter of Genetic engineering is capable of leading to the development of the plants which would fix nitrogen straight from atmosphere, instead from the fertilizers that are expensive. Genetic engineering is also having the power to create microorganisms that could be utilized for the purpose of biological control of the harmful insect’s pests etc.
B. Environmental Applications
The genetically modified microorganisms can be utilized for the purpose of degradation of the wastes, in the sewage or even in oil spills, etc.
C. Industrial Applications
In the industries and pharmacies it is used for the preparation of substances of commercial significance. Genetic Engineering is also used for the enhancement of the prevailing fermentation processes and then the manufacturing of the proteins from the wastes.
D. Medicinal Applications
Of the medical applications of the genetic engineering; the production of the hormones, the vaccines, required enzymes, the antibodies and vitamins, and in case of the gene therapy for a number of the hereditary diseases.
E. Gene therapy for the Purpose of Treating the Hereditary diseases
The previous experiments on gene transplantation were mainly concerned with the transplanting genes in vitro into the isolated cells or may be into the form of bacteria. The good news is that the Gene transplantation experiments are now been extended to the living beings.
